The Plough is an independent country Inn where food, wine and real ales are our passion. We are close to Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Clare; ideal for a relaxing break.
Our team of Chefs are passionate about food and are renowned for producing a mouth-watering selection of daily special dishes, along with a la carte menus that change with the seasons. We were pleased to be nominated by LocalSecrets.com in the Top 10 Places to Eat in East Anglia 2010, as well as runner-up in the Suffolk category. We always aim to make the most of the very best local produce, using local butchers, grocers and cheesemongers amongst our suppliers.
In the bar, we serve local and national real ales and are pleased to be members of CAMRA and the British Institute of Innkeeping, so it's fair to say we take our real ale very seriously! We hold two beer festivals a year, always on Easter weekend and also the last weekend of September.
Our wine list is pretty comprehensive, too, featuring the best of current New World bins, plus some European classics. All of the wines have been chosen, tried and tested by Kevin and Kate Wood, your hosts.
When it comes to food, Head Chef Bob Horsfield, Second Chef Steve Harrison and their team work hard to provide fresh, imaginative dishes, and are always happy to cater for any special dietary requirements. The menu is quintessentially British, with flashes of Pan-Asian influence, as well as hearty country fayre. With the exception of our cheese and ice-creams, we take great pride in making all of our desserts and puddings ourselves.
On the first floor, the en suite bedrooms have flat screen TV with digital channels, tea and coffee making facilities, WiFi connection throughout the Inn (free of charge) and all rooms overlook the superb Suffolk countryside. We are delighted to have once again achieved Four Stars for 2010/2011 from VisitBritain for the standard of the Inn.
We have beautiful gardens here at the Plough, tended by our gardener, Paul. The gardens overlook the rolling Stour Valley and are great in the summer months for dining or a long, cool drink. The gardens are also a stunning location for marquee weddings, with wonderful rolling countryside providing the perfect backdrop for photographs of your big day.
As a traditional country Inn, we more than welcome dogs on a lead in the bar area and in the gardens at any time, and there is always a handy supply of Bonio's behind the bar! Riders and visitors on hunts will even find a hitching post in the car park for horses.
The Plough Inn is conveniently located for Haverhill, Sudbury, Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket and Cambridge. Besides the beauty of the Suffolk countryside, other attractions include Bury St. Edmunds Cathedral, Long Melford Hall, Freeport Shopping Designer Outlet at Braintree, Newmarket Racecourse and the National Museum of Horseracing plus the beauty, history and great shopping of Cambridge.
Your hosts, Kevin and Kate Wood FBII, are resident proprietors of the Plough and look forward to welcoming you. We are always delighted to discuss any special requirements, party bookings or events that you may be planning.
